Happy New Year of The Male 2014

Happy New Year of the Male 2014 to you all.

I've started this Year of the Male as I mean to go on by talking about men, men, men. In today's Telegraph Men I say:

"When it comes to speaking out on these issues, it seems that men are suffering from “gender issue laryngitis” a term coined by the advertising giants M&C Saatchi last month, in their International Men’s Day report on modern manhood.

"This “lack of voice” is a common complaint of “minority groups” and while the majority of people in positions of public power are still undeniably male, the personal concerns of the majority of men and boys, often remain unheard."

Ally Fogg made a similar point in The Guardian on New Year's Eve saying:

"Women – and feminists in particular – have spent centuries developing the vocabulary to discuss the myriad ways in which their lives are affected by gender..... men, too often, mutter into our pints and change the subject."

And it's not all doom and gloom, as I say in my review of 2013 for Telegraph Men, it was a year when  “the cries of “what about the men?” have continued to be heard in many quarters as we try to make sense of the overwhelming evidence that men and boys don’t have it all.....there are clearly areas where we don’t do as well on average as women and girls and in 2013 it became a little bit easier for people to speak out and say we could be doing a lot more to help all men and boys prosper.

Whatever you in 2014 I encourage to find out about the Year of the Male and think about you can get involved in this important conversation.  Happy New Year of the Male to you!
